Crawfish  Frog
Lithobates areolatus

Description: Size: 2.2-3 inches, (record 3.6 inches).  A bulky, rather strange looking frog.  Skin color varies from cream colored to dark brown, with dark brown spots encircled by a white border.  Dorsolateral ridges very prominent.  The belly is whitish.

Voice: Call is a deep snoring "Waaaaa" with tremendous carrying power.  We have heard them in February and March.  This is a frog of the west Tennessee Coastal Plain.

Habitat: Crawfish burrows and the burrows of other small animals.  Breeds in farm ponds or water filled borrow pits.  We found breeding populations in an area where clay was excavated, forming shallow ponds.

Range: Coastal Plain of western Tennessee.
