The lenses are "shatter-resistant" , and the tube is made of a "hi-impact, corrosion-resistant polymer" . The 40mm plastic lens has a "integral aperture stop" which means that only the central portion of it is used to form an image. Thus the actual aperture is somewhat less than 40mm.
