Jupiter and Uranus in September 2010

The charts below show a 6 degree field outlined in red for five dates in September.   The 6 degree field should approximate the field of view in binoculars or in an erect view telescope finder.

Jupiter is at the center of each image.  You can help orient yourself by noting the positions of Jupiter's moons.  The position of the moons changes fairly quickly, and the positions shown are for 10:00pm CST on each date.  Stars are shown to 7th magnitude.  You can see the moons better if you steady your binoculars on a tripod or brace your arms against a solid object.

Uranus will look like a faint star in binoculars.  It's very small in telescopic views, only about 3.7 seconds of an arc in diameter.  However, it's fun to just see the tiny grayish-green disc and know that the photons hitting your retina bounced off the cloud tops of Uranus about 2 and a half hours before.

If you click on each chart, you will be taken to a more printer-friendly black-stars-on-white-sky version.
