Spring Peeper
Pseudacris crucifer

Description: Size: 0.7-1.2 inches, (record 1.5 inches.)  A small smooth-skinned, brown to reddish brown frog with a well defined cross on its back (hence the scientific name).  There is a dark line between the eyes.

Voice: Call is a short, high exuberant "Peeeep" which rises slightly at the end.  We have heard them call from January through November, with a peak during March and April.  Can be heard year-round in higher elevations.

Habitat: Found in almost any type of woodland or aquatic habitat.  Choruses are most likely to occur where trees or shrubs are standing in or near water.  These breeding areas are usually flooded edges of fields.

Range: Occurs statewide, from the western Coastal Plain to the peaks of the eastern mountains.  They have been heard calling from the Tennessee-North Carolina border at an elevation of 6,300 feet.
