The distance to NGC 1300 is approximately 69,000,000 light-years.  At right is a much reduced image from the Hubble space telescope.  To see the image in all of its splendor, click the image.  You will be taken to a zoomable full size Hubble image that is quite spectacular.  We all know that stars are very far apart and galaxies are mostly space, but nothing illustrates that better than seeing very distant background galaxies through the coils and bar of NGC 1300.  Be sure to zoom all the way into the image and pan around.

A Hubble Space Telescope image of NGC 1300. Some of the background galaxies visible through NGC 1300 in the large Hubble image are visible in our own image, and this was a pleasant surprise for us.
