Detail of Plate from Uranographia Brittanica by John Bevis, Showing the Crab Nebula Near the Tip of the Lower Horn.  Used by permission from the Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering & Technology

The illustration above shows the first ever depiction of the Crab Nebula.  The nebula is indicated by a small grayish circle up and to the right of the star marking the tip of the lower horn of the Bull.  This detail was used by permission from the Linda Hall Library of Science Engineering and Technology (see link above) and is part of a wonderful online exhibition called, Out of this World: The Golden Age of the Celestial Atlas.  The library has many online exhibitions including a new exhibition on Darwin entitled, The Grandeur of Life.  They are all excellent.
